The Federal Government has suspended the recent circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which reviewed the allowances of medical and dental officers in the federal public service. This decision aims to avert a nationwide strike threatened by medical associations over the controversial directive.

The circular, dated June 27, 2025, with reference number SWC/S/04/S.218/III/646, faced widespread criticism from medical unions, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). These associations argued that the circular contained provisions not mutually agreed upon and undermined the remuneration and welfare of medical professionals.

In response to the growing discontent, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, who also serves as the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Salaries, chaired a meeting on July 21, 2025. During this meeting, it was agreed that the implementation of the controversial circular should be suspended to allow for further consultation with various professional associations. This move is seen as a proactive step to address the concerns raised by medical unions and prevent the impending industrial action.

The suspension of the circular has been welcomed by medical associations, who view it as a positive development in the ongoing dialogue between the government and healthcare professionals. However, they have emphasized the need for continued engagement to ensure that the issues affecting the welfare of medical professionals are adequately addressed.

The Federal Government’s decision to suspend the controversial circular reflects its commitment to resolving the concerns of medical professionals and maintaining industrial harmony in the healthcare sector
