The Federal Government has announced plans to expand Nigeria’s satellite broadband network with the goal of providing internet access to 20 million Nigerians. The initiative, led by the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NigComSat) Limited, aims to bridge the digital divide and improve connectivity in underserved and remote areas across the country.
Speaking on the project, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy highlighted that the expansion will enhance educational, economic, and social opportunities for millions of citizens, particularly in rural communities. The government also emphasized that the project aligns with its broader digital inclusion strategy and commitment to leveraging technology for national development.
The expansion will involve upgrading existing satellite infrastructure, deploying new ground stations, and partnering with private sector stakeholders to ensure affordable and reliable internet services. Officials stated that the project is expected to create thousands of jobs in the technology and telecommunications sectors.
With the NigComSat expansion, Nigeria aims to strengthen its position as a regional leader in digital connectivity while ensuring that all citizens can participate fully in the digital economy.
