The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to generate N1.25 trillion from wheat production in 2025, as part of its efforts to enhance food security, reduce import dependency, and boost the agricultural sector’s contribution to the economy.

The proposal, unveiled by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, outlines an ambitious strategy to ramp up wheat production through improved farming practices, expanded cultivation areas, and enhanced support for local farmers.

According to officials, Nigeria’s reliance on wheat imports has been a significant strain on foreign exchange, with the crop accounting for a large portion of the country’s food import bill. The government’s initiative aims to reverse this trend by making the country self-sufficient in wheat production.

“This plan is not just about economic gains; it’s about empowering our farmers, creating jobs, and ensuring that Nigeria becomes a key player in the global wheat market,” a ministry spokesperson stated.

To achieve the target, the government intends to provide farmers with access to improved seed varieties, fertilizers, and modern agricultural equipment, alongside training programs and financial incentives. Collaboration with private sector players and international partners will also play a crucial role in achieving the set goals.

Experts have highlighted the significant potential of Nigeria’s wheat production, citing the country’s vast arable land and favorable climate for cultivating the crop in northern regions.

If successful, the initiative will not only bolster domestic food production but also position Nigeria as a wheat exporter, further diversifying the economy and reducing reliance on oil revenue.
