The Federal Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to create over two million jobs across Nigeria through its Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme, a flagship initiative aimed at tackling the nation’s housing deficit while stimulating economic growth. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed this during a working session with the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Dangiwa explained that the programme is designed to deliver affordable housing to low-income earners, vulnerable groups, the unemployed, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). As part of the plan, 100 housing units will be constructed in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, creating a total of 77,400 locations. He further broke down the job creation estimate as 25 people per housing unit, with 27 different job roles per location, amounting to over two million employment opportunities nationwide. Funding will be sourced from the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, with additional legislative backing proposed through a forthcoming National Social Housing Fund bill.

Updating lawmakers on ongoing projects, Dangiwa revealed that Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in Abuja, Kano, and Lagos are at advanced stages, with the Karsana Renewed Hope City nearing completion—pending minor delays due to access road construction. He also confirmed that house subscriptions have already begun, enabling developers to start recovering investments. Urging the Accountant-General of the Federation to prioritise housing in fund disbursements, the Minister stressed that “housing should be considered a priority sector.” In response, House Committee Chairman Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa expressed full support, promising strong legislative collaboration to ensure the programme’s success and tangible impact across the country.
