The Federal Government has announced plans to commence the first phase of the Siemens power project, which is expected to add 7,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Nigeria’s national grid. The initiative, spearheaded under the Presidential Power Initiative, aims to modernize and expand Nigeria’s power transmission and distribution infrastructure to improve supply reliability and support industrial growth across the country.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this while hosting a delegation from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet in Abuja. He noted that the first phase of the project marks a significant milestone in achieving the administration’s “Mission 300” energy access target, which seeks to expand power availability nationwide. Adelabu explained that the government has already added 700MW to the grid and is accelerating implementation to meet the rising demand for electricity in homes, businesses, and industries.

The Siemens-led project, a strategic partnership between Nigeria and Germany, is designed to deliver long-term energy stability by addressing bottlenecks in power generation, transmission, and distribution. Adelabu emphasized that the 7,000MW expansion will help stabilize electricity supply, ease pressure on existing infrastructure, and enhance economic productivity in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
