The Federal Government has issued an urgent call for residents living along the banks of Rivers Benue and Niger to immediately evacuate their homes due to the looming threat of severe flooding. Authorities have warned that the water levels in both rivers are rising rapidly and pose a significant risk to communities in the affected areas.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) sounded the alarm, citing the potential for widespread damage as heavy rainfall and upstream water releases threaten to overwhelm riverbanks. The agency emphasized the need for swift action, urging residents in flood-prone areas to prioritize safety and relocate to higher ground.

This evacuation directive comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters, especially after Nigeria experienced catastrophic flooding in recent years. The government has also set up temporary shelters and is coordinating with local authorities to assist those affected by the evacuation.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Betta Edu, stressed the importance of heeding the warning: “We cannot afford to take this lightly. The safety of lives and property is our top priority, and we urge residents to comply immediately to avoid preventable tragedies.”

The government has assured residents of ongoing monitoring and timely updates as the situation develops. Emergency response teams have been deployed to support evacuation efforts and provide relief supplies in anticipation of displaced communities.

As flood risks increase with the rainy season, the government is also calling on Nigerians nationwide to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols during this period.
