Lagos State’s grassroots administration has been thrown into mourning yet again following the death of Mrs. Adebimpe Akinola, Council Manager of Coker Aguda LCDA and Chair of the Forum of Council Managers. She passed away on Monday after a brief illness.

Her passing marks the fifth death of a female local government official in the state in just two months, an unprecedented string of tragedies that has unsettled many. Mrs. Akinola was laid to rest on Tuesday according to Islamic rites, with Janazah Prayer held at Al Kitab Mosque after Zuhr, followed by burial at Igbe Lara cemetery.

Since July 27, Lagos has lost four other women in council positions: Councillor Oluwakemi Rufai (Ward C, Ibeju Lekki) on August 13, Councillor Zainab Shotayo (Ward C, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye) on August 18, Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose (Vice Chairman, Badagry West LCDA) on September 20, and Councillor Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan (Ward F, Somolu) on September 21. The wave of losses has left the state’s local government system in deep grief and shock.
