The Finnish government has frozen the assets of Simon Ekpa, a remanded leader of the self-proclaimed Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, following his arrest on terrorism-related allegations. The asset freeze also targets companies linked to Ekpa and four alleged accomplices, who are also in custody, according to Finnish media outlet Yle.

Ekpa is currently detained at the high-security Kylmäkoski Prison in Akaa, Finland, which houses offenders convicted of serious crimes, including murder and rape. His associates were arrested alongside him on suspicion of inciting violence and financing terrorism.

Finnish police allege that Ekpa used social media to encourage violent activities in Nigeria’s South-East region, including attacks on civilians and authorities. He has reportedly referred to himself as the “Prime Minister” of the so-called Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile.

The Päijät-Häme District Court ordered Ekpa’s remand on charges of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent. Finnish authorities continue to investigate the alleged activities, which they say involve incitement and funding of terrorism.

Ekpa’s detention and asset freeze underscore Finland’s commitment to combating terrorism and holding individuals accountable for cross-border crimes.
