A raging fire engulfed two petrol-laden tankers at an MRS filling station along Numan Road, opposite Jezco filling station, near Yola International Airport on Tuesday.

The inferno, which sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky, caused panic among residents who rushed to the scene despite the clear danger. As of press time, two tankers had been completely consumed by the fire, while firefighters battled to contain the blaze. However, their efforts were reportedly hampered by a shortage of water.

Emergency responders, including security personnel, arrived at the scene to restore order and prevent further escalation.

This incident comes amid Nigeria’s worst economic crisis in a generation, where petrol remains a scarce and valuable commodity. Tanker explosions have been a recurring tragedy in the country.

In January 2025, at least 11 people lost their lives when a petrol-laden tanker exploded along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway after suffering brake failure and tumbling, leading to a devastating fire.

Another deadly explosion occurred on January 18, 2025, in Niger State, when a fallen tanker sparked a fire while people were scooping fuel. At least 86 people were killed, and 55 others were injured in the disaster.

Authorities have urged caution around fuel tankers, warning of the high risks associated with fuel transportation and storage.
