
The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for their remarkable victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Tournament.
D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive championship title on Sunday after defeating Mali 78–64 in a keenly contested final match held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The victory further cements Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball and reinforces the team’s status as the top-ranked side on the continent.
In her congratulatory message, the First Lady praised the resilience, teamwork and patriotic spirit of the players, coaches and support staff. She described the win as “a proud moment for Nigeria and a shining example of what Nigerian women can achieve with determination and unity.”
Senator Tinubu also commended the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for its efforts in developing the sport and nurturing excellence despite challenges in the sports sector. She urged the team to remain focused and continue striving for greater heights on the global stage.
The First Lady reiterated her commitment to supporting Nigerian women in sports, leadership and nation-building, noting that the triumph of D’Tigress is an inspiration to girls and women across the country.
D’Tigress’ victory over Mali adds another chapter to their outstanding legacy, having won the championship in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023 and now 2025. Their consistent performance has placed Nigeria at the forefront of basketball in Africa and earned widespread praise both at home and internationally.
