The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on wives of state governors to take bold and independent action in tackling social vices and economic challenges across the country. She made the appeal during the first quarterly meeting of Wives of State Governors for 2026, urging them to prioritise youth empowerment, women’s skills development, and grassroots initiatives tailored to the needs of their states.
Drawing from her experience as former First Lady of Lagos State, Senator Tinubu highlighted programmes such as the Spelling Bee competition, Musical Fiesta, and the Leadership Academy for girls as examples of initiatives that complemented government efforts while empowering young people. She encouraged governors’ wives to develop sustainable programmes that can grow independently and deliver long-term impact.
The First Lady also commended ongoing state-level initiatives, including Ekiti State’s adire fabric hub, and encouraged similar economic activities such as large-scale cassava production and smoked fish processing in riverine communities. She further advocated mentoring programmes for boys to help shape positive values and leadership among young men.
During the meeting, governors’ wives presented progress reports and outlined plans for 2026, including the launch of a National Community Food Bank across the six geopolitical zones to support malnourished children and pregnant women. Senator Tinubu also highlighted upcoming programmes under the Renewed Hope Initiative, including a national scholarship scheme, an elderly support programme, and activities for persons with disabilities, while urging states to promote environmental clubs and youth-led tree planting efforts.
