Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, will be aiming to bounce back when they face France in their second Group D match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco today (Wednesday). This comes after a disappointing 4–1 defeat to Canada in their opening game, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Despite a spirited effort in Salé, defensive errors cost Nigeria dearly, with Queen Joseph scoring their lone goal. The Flamingos now sit bottom of the table with zero points and a –3 goal difference. A win against France at 8 pm (Nigerian time) is crucial to keep their qualification hopes alive.

This fixture carries added significance, as both teams last met at this level 13 years ago in Azerbaijan. That encounter ended 0–0 in regulation time before France triumphed 5–3 on penalties in the quarter-finals.

France come into the match in high spirits after a 4–2 victory over Samoa. Renowned for their attacking flair and tactical discipline, the Europeans will provide a tough test for Coach Bankole Olowookere’s side, who must improve defensively while being more clinical in attack.

Speaking to NFF media, Flamingos captain Shakirat Moshood expressed confidence and determination within the squad.

“We are not happy about our first game, but we are going to win the second match against France because we are ready for them,” she said.

“We have been working very hard. I know we are going to win by the grace of God.”

Moshood added that the players have been encouraging one another and remain focused on making Nigerians proud.

“First, I want to say we are sorry for the first game. We promise that in the next match, we are going to do better. We will make Nigerians proud and happy.”

Coach Olowookere’s team is expected to adopt a more disciplined approach, focusing on compact defending and sharper transitions. In their last training session, drills centred on fixing defensive errors, set-piece organisation, and overall game management.

To boost morale, Monday’s training was replaced with motivational activities, team bonding, talks, and video analysis.

Support has also poured in from Super Falcons stars including Asisat Oshoala, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Joy Omewa, Taiwo Afolabi, Miracle Usani, and Folashade Ijamilusi, who sent video messages encouraging the girls ahead of the France clash.
