The disaster, which has left a trail of destruction, was confirmed in the latest update from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Tuesday.
According to SEMA, the floods have severely impacted 1,978 households and displaced an estimated 7,639 individuals across the 13 wards of Fune LGA. In addition to the loss of life and injuries, the disaster has destroyed about 1,215 homes, leaving many families homeless.
“The incidents led to the destruction of about 1,215 houses and injury to about 43 persons with 4 deaths recorded,” the agency stated, noting that the worst-hit areas include Jajere, Ngelzarma, Bindigi, Ngelshengele, Baushe, Kolere, Kafaje, Tello Dumda, and Kayeri.
In response to the growing crisis, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed immediate relief efforts to support the affected households. SEMA is currently profiling those whose farmlands have been destroyed, as agriculture is a critical source of livelihood for many residents in the region.
The flooding has caused widespread devastation in Yobe State, where many communities have already been grappling with the economic and social challenges posed by insurgency and poverty. The state government’s response will be critical in providing relief and preventing further loss of life as heavy rains continue to threaten the area.
