Floods have wreaked havoc across Nigeria, leaving 241 people dead and displacing 144,790 others, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The disaster has affected an estimated 433,578 people across 27 states and 123 local government areas.

In addition to the fatalities and displacement, NEMA reports:

839 injuries and 115 missing persons.

52,509 houses damaged and 74,767 hectares of farmland destroyed.

Vulnerable populations hit hardest include 197,566 children, 133,407 women, 82,820 men, 19,985 elderly persons, and 2,503 people with disabilities.

The South‑South region has recorded the highest number of affected individuals, with approximately 122,000 impacted and 71,000 displaced. The North‑East region follows, with about 105,000 affected and 31,000 displaced. Some of the worst-hit states include:

Adamawa – 60,608 affected, 23,077 displaced

Lagos – 57,951 affected, 3,680 displaced

Akwa Ibom – 51,813 affected, 44,732 displaced

NEMA highlighted major challenges in the response, including limited resources (60%), inaccessibility to some areas (18%), security risks (9%), community resistance (8%), and coordination issues (4%). Urgent needs include shelter, food, water and sanitation, health services, protection, education, and livelihood support.

Officials warn that the widespread destruction of homes and farmland could exacerbate food insecurity and other humanitarian concerns in the coming months.

The agency has called for coordinated federal, state, and local response efforts, emphasizing support for vulnerable groups, particularly children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
