The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, is meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, and his delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. The discussions are focused on strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and China, with an emphasis on cooperation in trade, investment, health, technology, and infrastructure development.

Delivering his opening remarks, Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to deepening ties with China, highlighting President Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024. During that visit, four Memoranda of Understanding were signed, which Tuggar noted are at various stages of implementation. He expressed optimism about building a more resilient relationship between the two nations.

Wang Yi, who arrived in Nigeria on January 8, 2025, emphasized that his visit reflects China’s ongoing commitment to its partnership with Nigeria. He noted that this trip, his first African visit of the year, continues the discussions initiated during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit held last year.

The Chinese Foreign Minister landed in Abuja at 7:15 PM local time and was warmly received by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, alongside other top officials, including the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai.

During his visit, Wang Yi is scheduled for high-level talks with Nigerian government officials, addressing global challenges, regional security, and economic development. The visit underscores China’s dedication to fostering growth, peace, and stability in the region, while strengthening its strategic partnership with Nigeria.
