The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified enforcement against truck drivers operating without properly latched containers, in a bid to curb the rising cases of accidents caused by falling cargo.
Chief Route Commander Victor Okelola of the FRSC Costain Unit Command said no truck would be allowed to leave the ports unless its containers were securely fastened to the vehicle. The operation, which covers port corridors, tank farms, and key regulatory checkpoints, is aimed at ensuring cargo safety and preventing avoidable tragedies on Lagos roads.
Despite sustained patrols, Okelola noted that some drivers remain non-compliant, prompting the corps to ramp up checks along major transport corridors. In addition to container latching, the FRSC is also targeting overloaded trucks and enforcing the installation of speed limit devices on commercial buses measures that have already contributed to a reduction in speed-related crashes.
The Commander stressed the need for a change in drivers’ attitudes toward safety, calling on the media and other stakeholders to intensify public sensitization. He also reminded operators of Lagos State’s commitment to prosecuting negligent truck owners under the 2018 Transport Sector Reform Law.
Falling containers have long posed a deadly threat in the state, particularly in port-heavy areas such as Apapa and the Oshodi-Apapa corridor, with several high-profile accidents in recent years claiming lives and damaging public infrastructure. The FRSC believes strict enforcement of container latching regulations is a crucial step toward ending the menace.
