Tinubu Congratulates Okonjo-Iweala on Re-Election as WTO Director-General
President Bola Tinubu on Friday congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, on her unanimous re-election as Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a renowned development economist and global finance expert, made history in 2021 as the first African and first woman to lead the 164-member WTO. Her second four-year term will begin on September 1, 2025, immediately after her current term expires on August 31.
President Tinubu expressed delight over her reappointment, emphasizing that it reflects the international community’s trust in her leadership to drive multilateral trade for sustainable global development.
“President Tinubu is confident that her continued leadership will strengthen the WTO’s role as a critical pillar of inclusive global economic growth and good governance over the next four years,” a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, read.
The Nigerian leader reaffirmed the country’s support for the WTO’s mission to promote a fair, inclusive, and equitable multilateral trading system, while highlighting Nigeria’s active role in the WTO, ECOWAS, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He assured Dr. Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria’s unwavering backing as she consolidates her reforms and continues to champion equitable global trade practices and international cooperation.
