Google announced on Monday that it will update Google Maps to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” aligning with changes made by the Trump administration to its “official government sources.”
Additionally, the company confirmed it will revert to using the name “Mount McKinley” for the Alaskan mountain currently recognized as Denali.
Last week, former President Donald Trump signed executive actions mandating these name changes on official maps and federal communications.
“We’ve received a few questions about naming within Google Maps,” the company explained in a post on X. “We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”
For users in Mexico, Google clarified that the name Gulf of Mexico will still appear. However, users in other countries will see both names displayed.
Trump defended his decision to restore President William McKinley’s name to the mountain, stating, “McKinley made the country ‘very rich’ through tariffs and talent.”
The mountain had been called Mount McKinley until 2015, when the Obama administration renamed it Denali, a term deeply rooted in the heritage of Alaska Natives. The move was seen as a symbolic gesture honoring their cultural legacy.rack Obama’s administration changed it to Denali as a symbolic gesture to Alaska Natives.
