Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing persistent internal crises and the need to protect the broader interests of the people of Kano State.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. According to the statement, Governor Yusuf communicated his decision in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, NNPP, in Gwale Local Government Area, with the resignation taking effect on Friday, 23 January 2026.
In the letter, the governor expressed gratitude to the party for the platform and support it provided throughout his political engagement since 2022, acknowledging the goodwill and cooperation he received from the party’s leadership and members across Kano State.
Governor Yusuf, however, pointed to prolonged leadership disputes and ongoing legal battles within the NNPP, which he said have weakened cohesion and created uncertainty at both state and national levels. He noted that the deepening internal divisions had become increasingly difficult to reconcile, thereby affecting the stability of the party.
He explained that his decision followed careful reflection and was guided solely by public interest considerations, stressing that his resignation was taken in good faith and without bitterness. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and the continued progress of Kano State.
The statement also disclosed that the governor is resigning alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
Acknowledging the resignation, the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, commended Governor Yusuf for his performance in office, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment, while expressing regret over the lingering crisis within the party.
The resignation marks a significant political shift in Kano State and signals a deepening realignment within the state’s political landscape.
