Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed has called on the Federal Government to revive the long-abandoned Kafin Zaki Dam, describing it as vital for agricultural growth, job creation, and food security in Bauchi and neighboring states.

Speaking during a visit by the Managing Director of the Hadejia–Jama’are River Basin Development Authority, Engr. Rabi’u Suleman Bichi, Governor Bala emphasized the state’s readiness to support the project by removing bureaucratic obstacles, training extension workers, and reclaiming farmlands.

In response, Engr. Bichi announced that the Federal Government has allocated ₦97 billion for irrigation and water projects in the region, including work on the Galala Dam and Katagum Irrigation Scheme.

Background

The Kafin Zaki Dam, proposed decades ago, is expected to generate 15 MW of electricity, irrigate over 120,000 hectares, and support flood control. While concerns remain from downstream states over environmental impact, supporters argue it would transform the Northeast’s agricultural landscape.
