In a bold move to address rising security concerns in Minna, Niger State, Governor Umaru Bago has announced the suspension of commercial motorcycle (okada) and tricycle (keke) operations between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily. This decision, revealed during a stakeholders’ security meeting on April 22, 2025, is part of a broader strategy to curb criminal activity in the state’s capital.

Governor Bago emphasized that while the restriction would be enforced across the city, medical emergencies would be considered exceptions. He stated, “I will not fold my arms and watch criminals continue to wreak havoc. It is the fundamental responsibility of government to protect the lives and property of its citizens.”

The meeting, held at the Government House in Minna, saw the participation of key local leaders including traditional rulers from the Minna Emirate and heads of various security agencies. These discussions were aimed at formulating measures to combat the increasing threat of insecurity that has plagued the region in recent months.

Strengthening Community Efforts

The governor’s directive also extended to community-level vigilance, urging district, village, and ward heads to ensure thorough documentation of residents within their areas. Additionally, Bago warned that any property found to harbor criminals or used for illicit activities such as drug trafficking would face severe penalties, including demolition. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to eliminating criminal networks that have entrenched themselves in the city.

Governor Bago also charged the state’s security agencies with intensifying efforts to raid criminal hideouts and dismantle existing criminal organizations. He placed responsibility on parents to oversee their children’s behavior, underscoring that individuals engaging in criminal acts would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. “Governance is a collective responsibility. We must all join hands to ensure that peace and security prevail in our communities,” he stressed.

Collaboration for Peace

The meeting was attended by various dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba; the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Faruk Bahago; traditional leaders, and heads of security agencies. The governor’s call for greater collaboration between local communities and government authorities is expected to play a pivotal role in restoring security in the region.

Governor Bago’s actions underscore his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on social disorder and criminality, with a strong focus on community collaboration to ensure a safer environment for all residents.
