Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political development in Nigeria’s southeast. His move, completed on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, is part of a broader trend of opposition governors shifting allegiance to the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
The defection has been accompanied by a mass exit of party members in Enugu State, including all 260 ward councillors, 24 members of the State House of Assembly, and the state PDP executive committee. Analysts say this realignment substantially strengthens APC’s foothold in the region.
Meanwhile, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri is reportedly preparing to join the APC, while another governor is expected to follow suit, though their identity remains undisclosed.
Reacting to the development, PDP officials, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, expressed disappointment but assured that the party remains committed to regaining power in 2027.
Political observers note that these defections could alter the political landscape, shifting alliances and influencing voter sentiment in key regions across the country.
