Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has urgently called on the Federal Government to implement decisive measures to prevent Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents from taking control of Marte, a town in Borno State.

Governor Zulum, who has been tirelessly coordinating security logistics late into the night, visited Marte to assess the security situation firsthand and identify sustainable solutions to restore stability. The visit comes after a devastating Boko Haram attack on the town last Friday, which led to the mass displacement of thousands of residents.

Marte, a town once resettled just four years ago, has again fallen victim to insurgent attacks, leaving its community vulnerable. Prior to the governor’s arrival, the town had been entirely abandoned, with approximately 20,000 residents fleeing to Dikwa for refuge. Speaking to the press, Zulum highlighted the grave situation and underscored the urgent need for federal intervention to prevent further disintegration of the region.

“Marte was resettled about four years ago, but unfortunately, over the past three days, it was ransacked and displaced once again,” said Governor Zulum. “This huge number of displaced persons is a threat, as allowing them to stay in the camp may make the younger generation more susceptible to recruitment by the insurgents.”

The governor further emphasized the importance of maintaining a foothold in Marte. “Hitherto, Marte Local Government comprises over 300 towns and villages. Now, we have only one standing. If we cannot maintain this one, we will lose the entire Local Government to the insurgents, and this will be disastrous,” Zulum warned, calling on the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army to work together in protecting the town.

Zulum also noted that his administration is committed to supporting security forces in their ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace in the region. “As the Governor of Borno State, I will do everything within my power to support our gallant military in their efforts towards ensuring peace in our beloved state,” he said.

The situation in Borno State, particularly in areas like Marte, continues to highlight the complexities of counter-insurgency operations and the importance of community cooperation in rebuilding regions affected by Boko Haram and ISWAP violence.

As the crisis unfolds, many locals and humanitarian organizations remain on high alert, hoping that more effective intervention from both state and federal authorities will help mitigate the growing insecurity in the North.
