Grace Ike Becomes First Female NUJ FCT Chairman in 43 Years

Grace Ike, a journalist with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN), has made history as the first female chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, 43 years after its establishment. She was elected and sworn in on Wednesday, along with four other executive members: Yahaya Ndambabo of Voice of Nigeria (VON) as Vice Chairman, Jide Oyekunle of Independent Newspaper as Secretary, and Sandra Udeike of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) as Treasurer.

The election, conducted by officials from the NUJ National Secretariat under tight security, saw a large turnout of journalists from various media organizations operating within the FCT. All positions were unopposed, with vacant roles to be filled through a by-election.

Ehidiamen Isibor, Esq., administered the oath of office under the supervision of the Credentials Committee, chaired by Henry Umoru.

A New Dawn for FCT Journalism

In her inaugural address, Ike described her election as a “new dawn” for journalists in the nation’s capital. She pledged to reposition the NUJ FCT Council with innovative projects aimed at improving members’ welfare.

“With immense gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility, I stand before you today as your elected Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council,” Ike said. “This moment is both humbling and inspiring, and I thank you sincerely for the trust and confidence you have placed in me.”

Ike also congratulated the newly elected NUJ National President, Alhaji Yahya Alhassan, and his team, pledging the FCT Council’s support in strengthening the ideals of the journalism profession.

She expressed heartfelt appreciation to the women of the council who supported her campaign. “Your courage, resilience, and support were pivotal to this victory, and I am forever grateful. Together, we will continue to inspire and empower one another.”

Quoting leadership expert John C. Maxwell, Ike added, “A leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way,” committing to a vision of unity, progress, and excellence for the union.

Distinguished Career and Leadership

Grace Ike brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She is the immediate past Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps and Vice Chairman of the FCT Correspondents Chapel. Her career spans roles at Independent Television (ITV) and Silverbird Television, among others.

The certificates of return were presented by Adeiza Momohjimoh, Vice President of Zone D, who congratulated Ike and the newly elected team. The officials will lead the NUJ FCT Council for the next three years.
