At least 11 people were killed and 12 others injured on Sunday after gunmen opened fire at a soccer field in Salamanca, a town in Mexico’s central state of Guanajuato, local authorities have confirmed.
According to a statement from the mayor’s office, the assault took place in a residential neighborhood, prompting security agencies to launch a manhunt for those behind the attack. Officials said 10 victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries later at a hospital.
“Eleven deaths have been confirmed, with ten occurring at the scene and one more during medical treatment,” the statement said. Authorities also reported that 12 individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical care.
The incident has heightened fears in the area, especially after the discovery of four bags containing human remains in the same town on Saturday night, just hours before the shooting.
Guanajuato has been one of Mexico’s most violence-stricken states in recent years due to criminal gang activity and territorial disputes, with Salamanca frequently caught in the crossfire.
Investigations are ongoing as security forces work to identify the attackers and restore calm to the community.
