A fire at a private hospital in Tamil Nadu, southern India, claimed the lives of at least six people and left more than two dozen injured, police reported on Friday. The blaze broke out late Thursday night in the city of Dindigul, and authorities are still investigating its cause.
According to the Press Trust of India, all six victims were found unconscious inside an elevator at the hospital.
Building fires are a frequent occurrence in India, often attributed to inadequate firefighting resources and widespread non-compliance with safety regulations.
This tragedy follows other recent incidents of devastating fires in the country. Earlier this year, a blaze at a children’s hospital in New Delhi killed six infants. In May, at least 27 people, including several children, lost their lives in a fire at a crowded amusement park arcade in Gujarat.
