
The House of Representatives has approved significant increases to campaign spending limits for candidates contesting various elective positions in Nigeria. The move aims to reflect current economic realities and ensure candidates have adequate resources for their campaigns.
The revised spending limits are as follows:
Presidential candidates: from N5 billion to N10 billion Governorship candidates: from N1 billion to N3 billion Senatorial candidates: from N100 million to N500 million House of Representatives candidates: from N70 million to N250 million State Assembly candidates: from N30 million to N100 million Local Government Chairmanship candidates: from N30 million to N100 million Councillorship candidates: from N5 million to N10 million
The legislation also sets a cap on donations from individuals or entities, limiting contributions to a maximum of N500 million per candidate.
The House stressed that the amendments are intended to promote transparency and accountability in campaign financing while providing candidates with sufficient resources to engage voters effectively.
