The 10th House of Representatives has announced plans to convene a high-level Legislative Security Summit in the final quarter of 2024. Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, revealed this during his welcome remarks at the ongoing plenary session in the Green Chamber.
The summit will focus on critical legislative reforms designed to bolster the capabilities of Nigeria’s security institutions. Emphasis will be placed on improving inter-agency collaboration and optimising intelligence use to combat insurgency, banditry, and other escalating security challenges across the country.
In addition, the event will explore strategies for enhancing community policing, securing the nation’s borders, and integrating advanced technology into the country’s national defence architecture.
This initiative, a direct response to Nigeria’s pressing security challenges, aims to bring together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Executive, security agencies, policy experts, and civil society organisations.
The proposed summit is part of the 10th House of Representatives’ broader effort to prioritise security reform, which is second on its 8-Point Legislative Agenda for 2023-2027. Since its inauguration, the House has maintained its commitment to enacting proactive legislation and enhancing oversight to support the government’s fight against insecurity.
The Speaker underscored that addressing the country’s security issues remains a top priority, with the House already outlining several legislative measures to support the ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national security.
