House of Representatives to Investigate Repeated National Grid Failures

The Nigerian House of Representatives has instructed its Committee on Power to investigate the recurring national grid collapses and submit a report within three weeks. This directive came after Hon. Mansur Manu Soro (Bauchi, PDP) raised a motion of urgent national importance during a plenary session.

Hon. Soro voiced his deep concern over the frequent grid breakdowns, which have resulted in nationwide blackouts and worsened the economic difficulties facing Nigerians. He emphasized that reliable electricity is essential for economic growth and development, noting that the grid had collapsed eight times in 2024 alone—a troubling pattern.

Soro highlighted that regions in the North West and North East have been particularly hard-hit by the power crisis, urging the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to restore electricity in these areas. He also pointed out the irony of these grid failures occurring despite promises from the Minister of Power for improved electricity supply, which had justified a government-approved hike in electricity tariffs for Band A customers.

The investigation aims to uncover the reasons behind the grid failures and propose solutions to prevent further disruptions in the power sector.
