The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to establish safe spaces for girls living in crisis-affected communities across Nigeria. Lawmakers emphasized the urgent need to protect vulnerable girls from abuse, exploitation, and displacement, especially in areas impacted by insecurity and communal conflicts. The resolution followed a motion highlighting the increasing threats faced by girls in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and unstable regions, urging government agencies and development partners to strengthen psychosocial support, education access, and gender-sensitive interventions.

In another development, a bill seeking the creation of Ibadan State scaled through its second reading in the House of Representatives. The proposed state, which would be carved out of the present Oyo State, is aimed at promoting balanced representation, administrative efficiency, and grassroots development. Lawmakers debating the bill noted that the creation of Ibadan State would bring governance closer to the people and enhance political inclusion, while others stressed the need to evaluate economic viability and constitutional provisions before final approval.

Meanwhile, the House also expressed concern over reports of hippopotamus attacks on residents of several communities in Gombe State. The lawmakers urged relevant federal and state authorities, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Ministry of Environment, to provide relief materials and take immediate steps to contain the situation. The motion called for collaboration with wildlife experts and security agencies to prevent further loss of life and property.

Collectively, these resolutions reflect the House of Representatives’ continuing legislative commitment to community safety, equitable development, and responsive governance across Nigeria’s regions.
