The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently rehabilitate the dilapidated Kano–Kari Highway in a bid to alleviate the growing hardship faced by motorists and commuters who ply the route daily.
The lawmakers made the appeal following the adoption of a motion at Tuesday’s plenary session, highlighting the strategic importance of the highway as a major link between several northern communities and economic corridors.
Presenting the motion, members noted that the highway’s poor condition has caused severe traffic delays, frequent accidents, and increased vehicle maintenance costs, placing additional burdens on travelers and transporters. They stressed that immediate government intervention was necessary to restore the road to a motorable state and improve safety for road users.
The House therefore urged the Federal Ministry of Works to include the Kano–Kari Highway in its current phase of road rehabilitation projects. It also directed its Committee on Works to ensure strict oversight and follow-up on the implementation process once approved.
Lawmakers emphasized that repairing the highway would not only ease mobility for residents but also boost trade, agriculture, and inter-state commerce, given Kano’s position as a major commercial hub in northern Nigeria.
The resolution reflects growing concern in the legislature over the state of federal roads across the country, many of which have deteriorated due to years of neglect and insufficient funding. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
