Hurricane Melissa Threatens Jamaica as Authorities Brace for ‘Catastrophic Event’

Could Jamaica be facing one of the most powerful storms in its history? Authorities have ordered mandatory evacuations as Hurricane Melissa, now a Category 5 storm, barrels toward the island with winds of 140 mph (230 km/h) and forecasts warning of up to one metre of rain. The storm has already claimed at least four lives in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with landslides and flash floods reported. Moving at a dangerously slow pace of five miles per hour, meteorologists fear Melissa will linger over affected areas, compounding destruction across the Caribbean.

Jamaica’s southern coastline is expected to face a storm surge of up to four metres, prompting the closure of Kingston’s international airport and all seaports. Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie made an emotional plea for residents to seek safety, saying, “This is one bet you cannot win. You cannot bet against Melissa.” Shelters have been activated nationwide as the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) warns residents to “seek shelter now” and prepare for days of isolation as the storm’s impact intensifies.

Emergency teams remain on high alert across Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, which Melissa is expected to hit next. The NHC’s deputy director, Jamie Rhome, described the storm’s rainfall potential as “catastrophic”, warning that conditions would deteriorate rapidly overnight. As Jamaica braces for impact, the region holds its breath — will Hurricane Melissa leave a trail of unprecedented devastation across the Caribbean? Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
