Aviation analyst Bagudu Abdullah has hailed the ongoing upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Ibadan, describing it as a major step toward transforming Oyo State’s economy and aviation landscape.
Abdullah praised Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration for its vision in turning the airport into a regional hub capable of handling international flights.
“This is not just an airport facelift but a strategic investment in Oyo State’s future,” he said.
The project includes the extension of the runway to 3,000 metres, installation of Category C lighting, modern firefighting systems, and a new international terminal that will raise passenger capacity to over one million annually.
Governor Makinde said the upgrade will ease pressure on Lagos and Abuja airports while boosting trade, tourism, and investment in the South-West.
Domestic flights resumed in September 2025, with international operations expected by mid-2026.
Abdullah expressed confidence that the upgraded facility will position Ibadan as a key aviation and commercial gateway for Nigeria. Visit www.jocomms.com for more news.
