The late Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, was on Tuesday commemorated in Ibadan, 60 years after the bloody coup that claimed his life, with a public lecture organised by the SL Akintola Foundation.

The event, held in honour of the statesman widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s foremost political thinkers, drew scholars, public figures, and admirers who reflected on his life, leadership, and enduring contributions to national development.

Speakers at the lecture paid glowing tributes to Akintola, describing him as a courageous leader whose political philosophy and actions continue to offer valuable lessons for contemporary Nigeria. They noted that, decades after his death, the relevance of history remains evident in the nation’s ongoing search for unity, justice, and purposeful leadership.

The occasion was marked by strong reflections on the lessons of the past, with participants emphasising the need for Nigerians, especially younger generations, to study history in order to better understand the present and shape the future.

The commemoration underscored Akintola’s lasting legacy and reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to preserving and promoting his ideals through intellectual engagement and public discourse.
