The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has obtained a court order to extend the detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai for an additional 14 days. The extension was granted by Chief Magistrate Okechukwu John Akweke in Bwari to allow investigators more time to conclude their probe into allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. The current remand is set to lapse on March 19, 2026.

El-Rufai’s legal team has challenged the latest court order, arguing that previous remand directives had already expired and that the extension violates due process. They have urged the ICPC to either formally arraign him in court or release him immediately. The case has drawn attention due to concerns about prolonged detention without charges being filed.

Legal experts and civil society groups have also weighed in, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to constitutional procedures. They warn that extended detention without formal charges undermines the rule of law and could set a concerning precedent for the treatment of public officials under investigation.
