The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will last for one year, ending on August 30, 2026. The announcement was made on Monday in a statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
INEC revealed that the physical phase of the registration commenced on Monday at its 811 state and local government offices nationwide, following the launch of the online pre-registration portal on August 18, 2025. Within the first week of the online exercise, 1,379,342 Nigerians had pre-registered, with youths between 18 and 34 years making up 62.37 percent of applicants.
The commission urged eligible citizens to register early, warning against last-minute rushes that typically overwhelm registration centres. It reiterated that the CVR is only open to Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered, while provisions remain for transfers and replacement of lost or damaged voter cards. Double or multiple registrations, INEC stressed, are illegal.
