On Monday, September 4th 2023, a military raid in Awka Etiti, aimed at capturing notorious IPOB members and their families, threw the town into chaos. The operation resulted in several casualties, and many individuals were taken away as security forces searched for those they believe are responsible for the ongoing unrest in the state.

Reports indicate that some Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB members have gone into hiding following attacks on police headquarters in Ihiala, Ekwusigo, Nnewi, Orumba, and other areas. In response, security forces are allegedly targeting the families of suspected IPOB members.
The Awka Etiti community head Chief Chris Amah had earlier called on the state government to intervene and restrain the police and military from targeting civilians, whom he described as members of a separatist group. He also demanded the immediate release of all women and children who were unlawfully arrested.
“Our community has always been peaceful, and anyone involved in these crimes must face the law,” said Chief Chris Amah.
