The Niger State government has urged locals to continue limiting their movement in areas suspected of having landmines planted by terrorists, particularly in farms along the outskirts of Basa in the Shiroro Local Government Area, until the military clears the area.

Commissioner for Homeland Security, Bello Abdullahi, made this statement in Minna following the 2024 Base Socio-Cultural Activities (BASA) event at the 013 Quick Response Force base of the Nigerian Air Force in Minna. Abdullahi emphasized that movement in these areas should remain restricted until the military conducts a thorough mine clearance, ensuring the safety of the local population.

He also pointed out that terrorists have been planting bombs, highlighting the increased military efforts to counter terrorism and banditry in the region.

BASA is an annual event marking the end of a successful operational year for the 013 Quick Response Force. The celebration showcases the cultural heritage of the Nigerian Air Force personnel and promotes unity among their families and the host community.

Governor Umaru Bago, represented by Commissioner Abdullahi, assured the public that the state government is aware of the suspected mines in Shiroro and is relying on the military to clear the affected areas.

Group Captain Austine Idoko, Commander of the 013 Quick Response Force, expressed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to continuing operations under the Chief of Air Staff to combat banditry and terrorism in the state.

In a touching moment, wives of Air Force personnel attending the event spoke to Channels Television, expressing their gratitude and prayers for the safe return of their husbands serving on the frontlines.

This comes after a tragic incident on December 19, 2024, when three bomb explosions rocked the Basa community in Shiroro, killing three people and injuring five others. The community has reported the presence of additional bombs allegedly planted by terrorists in the area.
