Iran on Wednesday accused Israel of “mass murder” after explosions involving paging devices belonging to Hezbollah, a Tehran-aligned group in Lebanon, killed nine people and injured nearly 3,000 others.
In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani condemned the explosions, describing them as a “terrorist act of the Zionist regime” and an example of “mass murder.”
Among those injured in Tuesday’s blasts was Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, who suffered minor injuries to his hand and face, according to Iranian media. State television reported that Amani’s injuries were not serious.
On Wednesday, the Iranian Red Crescent announced that it had sent “rescue teams and eye surgeons” to Lebanon to assist in treating the injured. Israel did not immediately comment on the explosions, which resulted in the deaths of nine people, including the 10-year-old daughter of a Hezbollah member, and injured about 2,800 others.
The blasts occurred shortly after Israel revealed plans to expand its military objectives in response to the October 7 Hamas attacks, which included targeting Hezbollah along the Israel-Lebanon border.
In his statement, Kanani expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, including the Iranian ambassador, and called for international action to address the “terrorist acts” of Israel. He emphasized the need for the global community to act swiftly against what he termed the impunity of “Zionist criminal authorities.”
