Iran’s Foreign Ministry Promises to ‘Respond Firmly’ to Israeli Strikes

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Monday that Tehran would “respond firmly and effectively” to the recent Israeli airstrikes on military sites over the weekend.

“We are employing all available means to respond decisively to the aggression of the Zionist regime,” Baghaei said during a regular news conference. “The nature of our response will depend on the nature of the attack.”

The airstrikes on Saturday targeted military installations in Iran as a response to an attack on Israel by Tehran on October 1, which itself followed the killing of Iran-backed militant leaders and a Revolutionary Guards commander.

According to military sources, at least four soldiers were killed in the strikes, and Iranian media reported on Monday that a civilian was also among the casualties. “The martyr Allahverdi Rahimpour, a civilian killed near Tehran during the recent attack by the Zionist regime, has been buried,” the local Fars news agency reported. Tasnim news agency confirmed the death, noting that Rahimpour worked as a security guard and resided in Nassimshahr, southwest of Tehran.

Previously, authorities had not reported any civilian deaths from the strikes.

These events unfolded amid Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas, which has recently escalated to include Hezbollah in Lebanon. Both groups are aligned with Iran in what is termed the “axis of resistance” against Israel.

Baghaei emphasized that a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon remains Iran’s “goal” and called on the United Nations Security Council, which is scheduled to meet on Monday regarding the Israeli strikes, to take a “decisive and firm” position on the matter. Iran had requested this meeting on Sunday.

During the conference, Baghaei criticized Israel for “abusing” Iraqi airspace to conduct the attacks on Iran, stating, “The Zionist regime does not respect any limits in its law-breaking approach… it has repeatedly violated the airspace of many countries.”
