Israel Reports Strikes on Hezbollah Targets in Lebanon

Israel launched strikes on dozens of Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Monday, retaliating for an attack claimed by the militant group—the first since a tenuous ceasefire began last week.

Both sides faced accusations of violating the truce, which took effect on Wednesday to end weeks of conflict that killed thousands in Lebanon and caused mass displacement on both sides of the border.

The Israeli military announced it had “struck Hezbollah terrorists, dozens of launchers, and terrorist infrastructure throughout Lebanon,” and demanded that Lebanon’s authorities prevent further Hezbollah activity.

Earlier, Hezbollah said it attacked an Israeli position in the disputed Kfar Shouba area, while Israel accused the group of launching projectiles at its post in the Shebaa Farms region, known in Israel as Har Dov. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack a “serious violation” and vowed to respond decisively.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported Israeli strikes on Hezbollah-controlled areas in southern Lebanon, about 20 kilometers from the border. Lebanon’s parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire, calling its actions a “flagrant violation.”

Israel, however, rejected such accusations. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar insisted that Hezbollah’s continued violations, including moving weapons and maintaining forces south of the Litani River—contrary to the ceasefire agreement—necessitated Israel’s response.

The truce terms require Hezbollah to withdraw its fighters and dismantle its military infrastructure south of the Litani River. In exchange, the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers will take control of the area while Israel withdraws its forces over 60 days.

A joint committee involving France, the UN, Israel, Lebanon, and the United States monitors compliance with the ceasefire. However, Lebanon has claimed over 50 Israeli breaches since the agreement began.

Amid escalating tensions, Lebanon’s health ministry reported one death from Israeli strikes, while the Lebanese army said a soldier was injured in a separate drone attack. Israel confirmed awareness of the incident and stated it was under investigation.

The United States called for all parties to respect the ceasefire, with French officials reiterating the same in diplomatic discussions. Despite the breaches, U.S. officials said they believe the truce is still holding.
