Jay-Z and Diddy Accuser Drops Sexual Assault Lawsuit

A woman who accused hip-hop moguls Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jay-Z of sexually assaulting her when she was 13 has dropped her civil lawsuit, according to court records filed on Friday.

The lawsuit, filed in December, alleged that Jay-Z—real name Shawn Carter—and Combs raped her at a party following the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2000. However, a new document submitted to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York states that the plaintiff is “voluntarily dismissing” the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled.

It remains unclear whether the parties reached a settlement. The woman, who has not been publicly identified, has not commented on the dismissal.

Jay-Z, 55, welcomed the lawsuit’s closure, calling it “frivolous, fictitious, and appalling.”

“This civil suit was without merit and never going anywhere,” he said in a statement. “The fictional tale they created was laughable—if not for the seriousness of the claims. I would not wish this experience on anyone. The trauma that my wife, my children, loved ones, and I have endured can never be dismissed.”

The original complaint alleged that Combs and Carter, who is married to pop icon Beyoncé, took turns assaulting the plaintiff while another celebrity watched. It also claimed that “many others were present at the after-party but did nothing to stop the assault.”

“Carter has been with Combs during many such instances described herein. Both perpetrators must face justice,” the filing stated.

Combs, also 55, faces separate federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Prosecutors accuse him of orchestrating a pattern of sexual abuse, including coercing women into drug-fueled sex parties through threats and violence. He has denied all charges, and his criminal trial is scheduled to begin on May 5.
