The Jigawa State Tanker Explosion Investigation Panel has confirmed that 209 people lost their lives, while 99 others sustained injuries in the devastating fuel tanker explosion that occurred on October 14 in Majiya town. The disaster, one of the deadliest in recent memory, also left 167 families affected and caused the destruction of properties worth millions of Naira.

The panel, led by Hafizu Inuwa, presented its findings to Governor Umar Namadi in Dutse on Wednesday. It revealed that of the 99 injured, 38 individuals are still receiving treatment in hospitals, while 61 have been discharged.

“The inferno resulted in the destruction of properties worth millions of Naira,” Inuwa stated, highlighting the extensive impact of the explosion.

The investigation attributed the explosion to a combination of factors, including damaged speed breakers, potholes near the accident site, and unsafe practices like night driving and excessive speeding. The fire, according to the report, was likely ignited by friction caused when victims attempted to scoop spilled fuel using metallic containers.

The panel recommended several measures to prevent future tragedies, including stricter safety protocols for petroleum transporters, regular road inspections, and the establishment of a dedicated road traffic control agency to monitor and enforce safety measures.

It also proposed the creation of trauma and burns units in health facilities, upgrading emergency response centers, and providing social protection for the most vulnerable victims through programs like the Danmodi Care Programme.

Governor Namadi commended the panel for its thorough investigation and pledged his administration’s commitment to implementing the recommendations.

“We owe it to the victims and the people of Jigawa State to ensure that such a disaster does not happen again. My administration will prioritize the welfare of the affected families and enforce stricter safety measures on our roads,” the governor stated.

Namadi also praised the resilience of the Majiya community and reaffirmed his government’s dedication to supporting their recovery.

The tragedy has underscored the urgent need for improved road safety and emergency response mechanisms in Jigawa State and across Nigeria. The state government has vowed to take immediate action to address the systemic issues identified in the report.
