The Federal Government has confirmed that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been safely evacuated from Guinea-Bissau following the sudden outbreak of political unrest in the country. Jonathan, who was in Bissau as part of the joint election observer mission of ECOWAS, the African Union, and the West African Elders Forum, was caught up in the tension after a group of soldiers announced the suspension of the electoral process.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Jonathan was immediately placed on a secure evacuation plan in coordination with Nigerian authorities and international partners. The government noted that the former president departed Guinea-Bissau without incident, along with other members of his delegation, after security assessments indicated a rapid deterioration in the political situation.
The Federal Government condemned the disruption of the democratic process in Guinea-Bissau and reiterated its call for the swift restoration of constitutional order. Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting regional efforts by ECOWAS and the African Union to stabilise the country and protect democratic institutions.
