Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has dismissed claims that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in decline, insisting that the party remains alive, strong, and resilient despite recent challenges.
Jonathan made the assertion while receiving members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by the National Chairman, Dr Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, at his private office in Abuja on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. The visit formed part of ongoing consultations aimed at reconciling party members and repositioning the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the former President, the PDP remains a critical pillar of Nigeria’s democratic system and is the only original political party formed in 1998 that is still in existence. He described the party as a national institution with the historical strength and resilience to overcome its internal challenges.
Jonathan noted that the PDP played a defining role in his political career, providing him the platform to serve as Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, and President. He said his continued commitment to the party is driven by gratitude and a sense of responsibility, urging party leaders to prioritise national interest and institutional growth above personal ambitions.
Earlier, Dr Turaki thanked the former President for his consistent support and guidance, assuring him that the current leadership is committed to a “Rebirth Agenda” focused on rebuilding party unity and restoring public confidence. He said the PDP leadership is engaging aggrieved members nationwide to strengthen internal cohesion and reposition the party as a viable alternative ahead of future elections.
The delegation included former Niger State Governor Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, Prof. Jerry Gana, former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi, Hajiya Zainab Maina, Chief Mike Oghiadome, Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and other members of the National Working Committee.
