
Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (rtd), the Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, has passed away at the age of 81. He died on Saturday night in a London hospital following a brief illness. The Kebbi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, confirmed the news in a statement released on Sunday in Birnin Kebbi.
Born on October 24, 1943, Sani Sami enlisted in the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962, and received his training at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, United Kingdom. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on July 25, 1963. Throughout his military career, he served in various sensitive appointments, including as the Commander of the Brigade of Guards during Murtala Mohammed’s administration. In December 1983, he was appointed as the military governor of Bauchi State, a position he held until August 1985. He retired from the army as a major general on September 3, 1990.
After retiring from the military, Sani Sami returned to his hometown and ascended the throne as the Emir of Zuru. He was known for his dedication to the traditions and cultural heritage of the emirate. He is survived by four wives and seven children.
The Kebbi State Government has extended its heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, the Zuru Emirate Council, and the people of Kebbi State. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
