In a significant development, Kachalla Yellow Danbokolo, a notorious bandit leader and close associate of Kachalla Turji, has been killed alongside six other bandit commanders in a fierce gun battle with security forces in Zamfara State. The confrontation took place in the Shinkafi Local Government Area on Sunday, where the Zamfara Community Protection Guards (CPG) ambushed the gang as they made their way toward a nearby forest.

Danbokolo, one of the most feared bandits in north-western Nigeria, had been a key figure in a series of brutal attacks across the region. Sources confirmed that the intense two-hour battle resulted in the death of 182 bandit foot soldiers, alongside the killing of their commanders.

“We are relieved that this ruthless bandit is dead,” said a source involved in the operation. “Danbokolo was responsible for countless atrocities, including abductions and killings in surrounding communities.”

The Pursuit and Capture
The deadly ambush began when operatives received intelligence about Danbokolo’s movements. A CPG officer reported that the bandits, including Danbokolo, were first confronted when their convoy was attacked as they journeyed through a rural route. Danbokolo was shot in the leg, and despite being carried by his foot soldiers across several villages in search of medical help, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

As he attempted to escape, he was eventually overtaken by the CPG, who caught up with him and executed him. The remains of his body were reportedly dismembered following his death, a shocking but symbolic end to his reign of terror.

Devastating Loss for Turji
Danbokolo’s death is expected to have far-reaching effects on the operations of his criminal partner, Kachalla Turji. “Turji is devastated by the loss. Danbokolo was a pillar in his operations,” one source revealed. “He was instrumental in many of the joint attacks on towns and villages.”

Turji, who has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous criminals in the region, is now reportedly contemplating fleeing to the Niger Republic or Chad to avoid being captured by Nigerian security forces. The ongoing military operations and the suspension of GSM networks in the region have made communication difficult for the bandit groups, further complicating their ability to regroup and resist.

A Key Player in a Larger Scheme
Sources familiar with the banditry activities in the region confirmed that Danbokolo played a pivotal role in the coordination of attacks across Zamfara, Sokoto, and parts of the Niger Republic. He had masterminded several high-profile attacks in the Sabon Birni, Isa, and Gwadabawa areas.

“Danbokolo was one of the most powerful figures in the region, and his elimination is a significant win for the Nigerian forces,” said Mustapha Jafaru Kaura, Special Adviser to Governor Dauda Lawal on Broadcast Media. “We are optimistic that the death of this key commander will soon lead to the capture or killing of Turji.”

The Rise of Shinkafi Volunteer Forces
The killing of Danbokolo was hailed as a victory by many local residents, who have long lived in fear of the criminal group. One resident, speaking to Daily Trust, described the event as “a moment of pure joy,” expressing disbelief that Danbokolo, who had terrorized their communities, was finally dead.

“We have lived in constant fear of his gang,” the resident added. “But today, we are celebrating his death. Danbokolo was the real commander behind most of the attacks in the area.”

Ongoing Impact on Zamfara
The region has been under siege by armed bandits for several years. Recent attacks, especially in the Shinkafi and Tsafe local government areas, have led to the loss of many lives and displaced thousands. With the bandits often using motorcycles to access remote villages, they continue to destroy properties, abduct residents, and cause severe disruption to daily life.

Security forces have launched multiple offensives in an effort to break the grip of the bandit gangs, with mixed results. In the past few weeks, however, concerted efforts from joint military units have led to the neutralization of key leaders, such as Danbokolo, significantly weakening the bandits’ hold over the region.

A Glimmer of Hope
Despite the challenges, the recent successes of security forces have sparked hope among residents of the region. “The death of Danbokolo is a turning point,” said another source close to the operation. “It shows that the bandits can be defeated.”

While authorities remain cautious, there is optimism that the removal of key figures like Danbokolo will lead to more victories against banditry in Zamfara and beyond. The state government has vowed to continue its efforts to restore peace and stability to the area, with the ultimate goal of ending the cycle of violence that has plagued the region for far too long.

As for Turji, the countdown to his capture or elimination seems imminent, and many are hopeful that this will mark the end of an era of rampant banditry in the north-western states of Nigeria.
