Vice President Kamala Harris took center stage at a star-studded rally hosted by talk show legend Oprah Winfrey on Thursday in Michigan, one of the key battleground states in the upcoming U.S. election. The event, titled “Unite for America,” was packed with appearances from Hollywood A-listers including Jennifer Lopez, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Chris Rock, and Ben Stiller, who all joined remotely to express their support for Harris.

In a chat-show style setting, Winfrey opened the event by praising Harris’ newfound confidence after taking over the Democratic presidential ticket from Joe Biden. “It feels like a veil or something dropped,” Winfrey remarked. Harris, 59, responded by saying, “We all have moments in our lives when we must step up,” as she reflected on her transition into the presidential race.
The rally, livestreamed to millions, came at a critical moment with just weeks left until the November 5 election. Harris took the opportunity to call for unity against “powerful forces that would try to divide us,” pointing directly at her Republican opponent, former president Donald Trump.
Harris also laid out her campaign’s core issues, touching on hot-button topics such as abortion rights, the economy, immigration, and gun control. She appealed to gun owners, acknowledging the importance of responsible ownership in a country with more firearms than citizens. “I’m a gun owner too,” Harris said humorously. “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” she joked, before adding, “I probably shouldn’t have said that… my staff will deal with that later.”

The rally also featured remote appearances by groups like “Swifties for Harris,” a fanbase of Taylor Swift supporters, and “Cat Ladies for Kamala,” a playful response to Trump running mate J.D. Vance’s past comments on childless women. The event aimed to mobilize a diverse base of voters, including younger demographics and suburban women, who are seen as crucial to Harris’ path to victory.
Meanwhile, Trump, speaking at a separate event, criticized Jewish Americans for not supporting him in past elections, contrasting the tone of the two rallies as both campaigns ramp up their efforts ahead of the tightly contested vote.
As Harris and Winfrey embraced at the end of the event, the talk show icon summed up the atmosphere by expressing her optimism for the future. “I feel hope and joy rising,” Winfrey declared, closing out a rally that blended celebrity glamour with serious political messaging in the race for the White House.
