Harry Kane says the prospect of facing Chelsea adds “extra motivation” as Bayern Munich prepare to kick off their Champions League campaign at home to the Premier League side on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old striker, who joined Bayern from Tottenham in 2023, admitted his long-standing rivalry with Chelsea during his Spurs days will give the tie added edge.
“The rivalry was a good one, especially in the Pochettino era when we had a lot of tough, competitive games,” Kane told reporters in Munich on Tuesday.
Kane scored eight goals in 22 appearances against Chelsea for Spurs, and said playing English opposition always fuels him further.
“Maybe the Chelsea fans don’t like me as much, maybe the Arsenal fans don’t like me as much — that makes me want to play better,” said the England captain. “All those little things add something special.”
Since moving to Germany, Kane has delivered a remarkable 93 goals in 101 games, helping Bayern to last season’s Bundesliga crown — his first team trophy.
“I always backed myself to score but I didn’t expect it to go this well,” he said. “The style suits me, I’m confident and physically and mentally strong.”
Rejecting suggestions from Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness that the six-time winners are underdogs in Europe this season, Kane said: “At Bayern there’s always an expectation to win the biggest competitions. If we don’t win the Champions League, there will always be disappointment.”
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany also addressed the influx of Bundesliga talent to England, noting: “There’s a big financial gap with the Premier League, and we need to find a solution one day. But tomorrow isn’t Bundesliga versus Premier League — it’s Bayern versus Chelsea.”
