The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Aboki, has ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Correctional Facility.
According to an audio message shared with journalists by the spokesperson of the Kano State Judiciary, Baba Jibo, the release was prompted by the inmates’ deteriorating health and prolonged pre-trial detention as part of efforts to decongest the facility.
Justice Aboki’s visit to the facility was conducted under the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) Special Provision Act, which empowers state Chief Judges to periodically inspect correctional centers and release inmates when necessary.
During the visit, Justice Aboki noted that many of the inmates were in poor health, lacked access to adequate medical care, and had become physically weak. She explained that their release would allow their families to provide the care they need.
The Chief Judge also expressed concern about the poor feeding conditions at the facility, attributing it to the country’s economic challenges. She urged the Kano State government to step in and provide additional food supplies to improve the welfare of inmates.
